Previous Miscarriage Tied to Higher Risk of Gestational Diabetes

According to a retrospective cohort study, published in JAMA Network Open, a history of spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, was associated with a higher risk for gestational diabetes later in subsequent pregnancies.

In the study including 102,259 pregnant women, those who previously had a miscarriage were found to have a 25% higher relative risk for subsequent gestational diabetes (RR 1.25). Moreover, women who had had more spontaneous abortions had higher relative risks for developing gestational diabetes, with RR 1.18 for one spontaneous abortion, RR 1.41 for two spontaneous abortions, and RR 1.43 for three or more spontaneous abortions.
